Payroll Management: Success To Business

by George Purdy

Remember when hiring people for your payroll management department that the more money is generated by the business or office, the more difficult it becomes to spot discrepancies. During the hiring process, a thorough background check, interviews and even fingerprinting is used to check employees for a criminal record.

The payroll department is also responsible for making sure that all taxes, insurance, and any other deductions (perhaps child support, or a student loan payment) are figured directly from each employee’s paycheck, and in the correct amount. In certain companies the payroll department is also responsible for things like expense accounts, reimbursements, and mileage for employee use of personal vehicle for business.

Many smaller businesses still use a payroll employee to hand write payroll checks and determine deductions. Larger commercial enterprises will use complicated software to make sure that employee paychecks are correct. These are two different approaches with the same result.

Accuracy is of the highest priority when doing any payroll. Since all employees are so touchy about their paychecks and will challenge you over every suspected error, it’s definitely in your best interests to do payroll right. Keep in mind, though, that no matter how hard you try, though, there are still employees who are going to think they’ve been cheated by the amount printed on their paychecks. Additionally, the national government is extremely picky about deductions and can cause you nightmares at audit time.

Finally, it is critical that a payroll department use payment methods that are as efficient as possible so that employee compensation costs are low. Traditional methods relied on printed paychecks, but that has been replaced to some degree by direct deposit which reduces the need to visit the bank, and which credits the employee’s account electronically. Another method is to either to distribute or to credit debit card accounts, which enables the employee to use the debit card to pay for products or services.

No business will be able to function without functioning payroll management. Good payroll departments issue accurate paychecks in a timely fashion, which is always a requirement for both employers and employees. Thus, these departments are capable of helping to maintain good employee morale.

An issue to consider when hiring payroll management personnel is that as more and more is generated, it becomes more difficult to locate missing funds. Larger commercial enterprises will use complicated software to make sure that employee paychecks are correct. These are two different approaches with the same result. Additionally, the national government is extremely picky about deductions and can cause you nightmares at audit time. An efficient payroll department will keep a company’s employees happy. Receiving accurate paychecks in a timely manner is high priority on any employee’s list, which means it should be very high on an employer’s list also.
