by Robert Paul Williams

You have heard the buzz lately. If you open up your own membership site, you could generate a healthy monthly income with little to no maintenance work. When considering such an endeavor, it is important to know what your options are. While there may be a variety of variations on these themes, membership sites come in 7 basic flavors. Carefully examine your options to help you decide how you would like to set up your membership site.

These are the seven basic varieties of membership sites:

1. Coaching/ Mentoring Sites. A coaching site mentors its subscribers with a variety of tools intended to aid in a specific subject. Such sites typically offer expert advice within its particular topic albeit weight training, dieting, gourmet cooking, etcetera. Owning such a site allows you to disseminate your knowledge to a mass audience rather than one on one coaching.

2. Private Label Rights. PLR sites typically provide its’ members written articles that address a particular subject matter. Members use these articles to create content on their websites. As an example, a work at home mom PLR article membership website would provide to its members articles that address work at home mom topics. Subsequently, these articles can be modified and placed on the members own website, blog, forum, etcetera.

3. Social Sites. Obviously this kind of site has become immensely popular in recent times with the incredible growth of friendship and ‘dating’ sites but they can also be designed to enable, say, dog lovers, Harley riders, or people with any other characteristics, hobbies or lifestyle choices to communicate with each other.

4. Content Sites. A very sought after type of membership site as content sites provide fresh information and resources relevant to a specific topic or niche. Typically, the information provided is very specific and not readily available anywhere else. Members pay a monthly fee to have access to this information.

5. Paid Newsletter. This is also a type of paid monthly membership service that has probably been around the longest. A writer or website owner would bring together specific content that is related to a particular theme. The membership benefits by having all the up to date information readily accessible to them without having to sort through various media outlets to find the same information.

6. Message Boards or Forums. Most are accessible at no charge. Visitors typically utilize message boards and forums to post information or to browse around and see what visitors have posted. Some areas of the forum can be made available for a low membership fee. This can be rather difficult unless you provide your visitors with information that they’d be willing to pay for.

7. Content Delivered by Video or Audio. These types of membership sites offer audio or video files to its membership usually on a monthly basis so they can be published on the members site.

Hopefully you can see that owning a membership site still fits the usual business model of supply and demand. Regardless of the type of membership site you start, it is important to provide quality information that people are willing to pay for.
