Should You Grant Minors To Tan At Your Salon?
Tanning salons seem to be very trendy for teenagers that want to look and feel their very best. In fact, this is increasingly becoming a very common group of customers at any given salon. They want to be able to have a gorgeous tan for upcoming events as well as to just look their very ideal.
There may be laws in place though that prevent minors from using tanning salon services without the consent of their parents or their guardian. Of course most of it in the winter will be in the afternoon hours due to school.
It is a good rule of thumb to make sure you’ve any minor that can legally tan in your salon gain permission from their parents or guardian. You can keep the process easy by giving them a release to have signed. As long as they do so you aren’t liable but you can’t verify it their parent or guardian is the one that actually signed it. This is why some tanning salons require the signing to be done in the salon rather than outside of it.
If you’re worried that the consent form will turn people away, don’t be. Most parents don’t mind at all if their kids go to a tanning salon. They might help them to cover the cost of it. They might also want to sign themselves up for the services as well. You can encourage this by offering a discount at the time when they come it to sign the release form.
The release form you offer needs to have some useful information on it. Make sure both the parent and the teenager understand it. In fact, you should have both of them sign it just to make sure that’s clear. Offer them information on safety, risks, and what your policies are the tanning salon. This will help you avoid common problems down the road.
In addition to having the parents sign a permission slip, each minor should be signing one as well. All of the information on the tanning process, risks, using eye protection, and other information you need them to know needs to be on it. To reduce the amount of paperwork, you can just have two signature lines on each form. One for the person tanning and one for their parent or guardian if it is applicable.
One concern many tanning salon owners though is if minors are responsible enough to be using their tanning equipment. Make sure they know how to use everything as well as where the emergency shut off is. Should you find any person in general abusing the equipment then you need to ask them not to come back. This won’t be limited just to minors though but to all of your customers.
