Tips on Selecting a Domain Name

by Simon Krandock

If you are doing a business, you cannot avoid having a domain name. Since the best way to be known is to advertise on the Internet, you will need a domain name by which Internet users get into your website. A domain name is the text name equivalent to the numeric IP address of a PC on the Internet.

Although most people feel they do not really need a domain name, the fact is that a domain name is very important for a business to be successful. After all, business revolves round sales, and sales depend on credibility. Having a domain name is the first step towards building credibility. It makes your customers feel comfortable while doing business with you. There are many search engines that give importance to the home page of a particular domain.

It is not that a good domain name is solely responsible to make or break your business. However, yes, it does go a long way in determining success. So you must choose a proper register web address. There are many options like .net, .org, .biz and others, but .com is the most popular extension and also it lends your business more credibility. Domain names can just use alphabets, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and special symbols are not permitted. Also, domain names are not case sensitive.

The name should be short and simple — not more than 14-16 characters. A catchy name catches attention, so make it creative and exclusive, and never long and confusing. It should be easy to remember. Also, add a couple of keywords in your domain name to help search engines rank them. It’s important that the register domain name reflects the business you are in.

Domain names that were once used but have expired are a useful place to search for your domain name. This way you can have a good idea about what kind of a domain name will fit you. Make sure you do not get into any copyright infringement issue with your domain name.

Another point to bear in mind is that you should not register your domain names with your web host to avoid unnecessary hassles when you decide to change your host, because then you will have to move your domain too. It is best to keep the two separate.

There are many options available within the parameters to make your domain name exclusive. You can have more than one domain name; you can have full name and a short name; and spell your domain differently. Thus, you can be sure you have them all and no one else can tread in your domain.

You must ask around and take a vote for the best name. Do not decide on your own. There is a storehouse of ideas around you. Take advantage of that. Ask your friends, relatives, colleagues, employees and others for ideas.

You must also make sure that you do not pay the moon for registering your domain name. Prices have been slashed down recently. So shop around for the best possible rate!
