Finding A Freelance Copywriter: Here Are 4 Traits To Look For

Freelance copywriters are everywhere these days. If you are looking for a good one to help you create your next promotion or help grow your sales, then here are four things to consider. Four traits you want to look for in your next freelance copywriter.

1. Communication – Working with a freelance copywriter who is able to communicate well is one of the most important traits you should look for. Without clear communication skills, your entire promotion could be doomed.

Can your copywriter communicate clearly with YOU? Can they understand what you want to accomplish? Can they communicate well with your employees and all of the other professionals involved in the project?

Of all of the problems I’ve had in my own freelance copywriting business, EACH one can be traced in part to poor communication.

2. Accountability – Is your copywriter responsible for the results of their actions? When a promotion fails, will they accept their fair share of the blame (and come up with some ideas to help improve future results) or will they point the finger at you, your product or your process?

During the interview process, you might consider asking the copywriter about successful projects they’ve worked on. And be sure to ask them about projects that didn’t work out so well. How they speak about the failures will tell you a lot.

3. Marketing Mindset and the Ability to SELL – Can your copywriter sell your stuff? That’s really the question you need to answer BEFORE you hire them.

So you want to get a pretty clear idea about their selling skills or selling experience. One of the quickest ways to do that is simply to pay attention to how they sell YOU on becoming a client.

4. Writing Skills – Of course your freelance copywriter should be good with words. But it’s not the most important thing to look for when you’re out searching for someone to hire.

You want to find a freelance copywriter who is easy to work with, who accepts responsibility for their results, and one that can sell your stuff. Without those traits, developing a longterm and profitable relationship with them could be quite a challenge.

Hiring a freelance copywriter can be one of the best investments you make in your business. Just get the information you need to make the best decision for your business and your needs.
